CHARLOTTE, N.C., and RICHLAND, Wash., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ --

Siemens Power Corporation (Siemens) and Duke Engineering & Services (DE&S) today announced the signing of a teaming agreement to provide digital instrumentation and control (I&C) upgrade services to the U.S. nuclear power industry.

The Siemens/DE&S team will offer turnkey capability for implementing digital I&C upgrades in nuclear plants. Services, from design to installation, include full system integration, work practice preparation, operator and maintenance training, procedure revisions, regulatory consulting, systems testing, spare parts and technical consultation and support.

"Commitment to our customers' success is a key element of the Siemens philosophy. Teaming with DE&S, which has the same commitment, provides an unrivaled team for the design, supply and implementation of digital instrumentation and control system upgrades," said Siemens' Karl-Heinz Lochner, Vice President - I&C. "Such an approach with well-matched team members should provide an extremely high level of confidence for our customers that these upgrades, important to the long-term operation of their plants, can be successfully undertaken with minimal economic and licensing risk."

"The U.S. nuclear power industry is essential to a strong and economically viable energy supply and Siemens and DE&S have shared a long-standing commitment to the success of that industry," said Bobby Abrams, DE&S executive vice president. "DE&S personnel, as part of one of the nation's largest nuclear engineering firms, have made their mark in nearly every U.S. nuclear power plant, applying their engineering and technical expertise to the full gamut of nuclear issues. We are very excited about the depth of service we can offer our clients by joining DE&S' nuclear plant operating and maintenance experience with Siemens' excellent reputation as a world-wide leader in electronics and nuclear power."

By upgrading from analog to digital I&C systems offered by Siemens, improvements in nuclear plant economics can be achieved through lower personnel costs, enhanced operational awareness and control, reduced effort for engineering and documentation, higher availability and enhanced control, as well as optimized tolerance ranges. Digital upgrades can be performed on all plant systems needed for operation, surveillance, automation, monitoring and archiving. Plant processes can be monitored remotely and controlled via modern and "operator-friendly" control room screen displays.

Siemens has been a major force in the international nuclear power industry for 40 years. There are 23 Siemens-built nuclear units currently in operation in five countries, with another two under construction. Siemens has supplied, or is in the process of supplying, 26 nuclear plants world-wide with its TELEPERM(R) instrumentation and control system. Siemens-designed nuclear power plants continuously show excellent performance results measured by availability, reliability, and power production. They are world renowned for their highly engineered features. More information about Siemens can be found on the Internet at: www.siemenspower.com
