Russian Army's Environmental Security Commission Flies to Kosovo

MOSCOW, Jan 31, 2001 -- (Military News Agency) An environmental security commission of the Russian Armed Forces flew to Pristina on Tuesday, the Military News Agency learned.

The commission is headed by Colonel Yuri Gudnin. Its main mission is to carry out radiation ecological monitoring of the Kosovo areas where the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent within KFOR is serving.

The commission comprises experts in radiation, chemical and bacteriological weapons, Yuri Gudnin told the Agency. The Russian officers are equipped with alpha spectrometers to measure emission of low-power radioactive substances such as depleted uranium.

Besides Kosovo, the commission is planning to examine north-eastern areas of Bosnia, where paratroopers of the first separate airborne brigade within SFOR are stationed.
