NRC says increased Sr-90 levels in baby teeth not due to nuclear plants

The NRC has refuted claims that releases of radioactive Stronium-90 (Sr-90) from nuclear power plants is linked to greater-than-expected Sr-90 levels in the baby teeth of children born during the 1980s and 1990s in the New York-New Jersey-Long Island metropolitan area. An article published last year in the International Journal of Health Service indicated there was a strong connection between nuclear reactor releases and increases of cancer and other immune system-related disorders in children. The NRC recently responded to the article at the request of a New Jersey regulator. In one of its talking points on the article, the NRC said, "Nuclear power plant emissions of Sr-90 are inconsequential compared with other man-made sources and should be undetectable in (baby) teeth."
