The danger of chemical pollution greater than the one of depleted uranium

The international ecology organization Greenpeace office in Greece stated today in Athens that the danger of chemical pollution of the FRY, generated by the NATO bombing in 1999, is much greater than the one of depleted uranium originating from the ammunition used in the attacks. Steljos Psomas, the chief of the Greenpeace, quoted the information from the UNEP report, gained through examination on site, and emphasized that "the problem is not as much in the fact that the ammunition with depleted uranium was used, as it is in the carcinogenic substances released in the intensively bombed regions".

"Benzene, and other aromatized hydro-carbonates and dioxides represent and enormous danger for the population. These substances were generated in the combustion of over 80,000 tons of oil derivatives. Another danger is a greater emission of sulfur-dioxide generated after the bombing", Psomas stated at the press conference.
