CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 2000--MACTEC, Inc. was recently awarded a $6 million decontamination and dismantlement contract with Fluor Fernald at the U.S. Department of Energy's Fernald site, the former uranium metals production facility near Cincinnati, Ohio. Under the Plant 6 complex D&D contract, MACTEC is performing interior dismantlement of Plant 6 and will remove equipment and transite over the next several months. MACTEC is also handling surface decontamination, size reduction of building material, and the treatment and disposal of contaminated materials generated. MACTEC expects to complete the project by January 2002. MACTEC also has the D&D contract for Fernald's Plant 5 complex, scheduled to be dismantled by May 2001. The 1,050-acre Fernald facility operated for 37 years producing high-purity uranium metal products in support of the U.S. defense programs. Production terminated in mid-1989, and the mission of the site turned to environmental cleanup. The Fernald D&D Project is responsible for the above-ground remediation of more than 200 former uranium processing facilities and associated equipment at the Fernald site.

With 77 offices, 2,300 employees around the country, and annual revenues of $325 million, MACTEC, headquartered in Denver, Colo., was ranked seventh among the top 100 DOE contractors nationwide. A July, 2000, issue of Engineering News-Record ranked MACTEC tenth in nuclear waste management and fourth in all-environmental firms.
