Comitato STOP all'Uranio 238
Some italian citizens, concerned about the use of Depleted Uranium munitions during the War against Yugoslavia, joined to create the italian committee STOP U-238! in June 1999. In little time, they collected many information and discovered that DU is also used in a wide range of civil/military applications:
a) biological shieldings
against X and gamma rays for radiation protection:
- gammaradiographic units
for materials testing
- shieldings in radiotherapy
appliances (hospitals)
- diaphragm system, shielding
walls (hospitals)
- shieldings in ships with
nuclear propulsion engines
b) transport containers of radioactive sources or wastes;
c) ballast:
- yacht keels
d) inertia and balancing
counterweights:
- aircraft industry (Boeing,
Lockheed, Bell, CarterCopter)
- ballistic applications
(cruise missiles as Tomahawk)
- vibration absorptions
- centrifugal counterweights
e) weapons:
- kinetic penetrators (DU
rounds)
- land and antipersonnel
mines (ADAM, PDM)
- military tank armor (Abrams)
As the italian firefighters were unaware about the dangers, the committee filed a denunciation to the local police (July, 16, 1999) to warn about adverse effects of DU recycled in military and common objects. The committee created a fast Internet publishing team to spread information about DU contamination, and established E.N.A.D.U. to join together the european organizations who fight against low-level radiation hazards and chemical toxicity from DU products.
