Subject: Depleted Uranium

Dear Navy Public Affairs,

When US nuclear submarines practice shooting torpedoes in the Strait of Georgia, they release ballast to allow torpedoes to surface for recovery.  Is depleted uranium used as ballast in any of these torpedoes ?  Has any depleted uranium ordinance been used in the Strait of Georgia?  Is any depleted ordnance stored off Vancouver Island or on the B.C. Mainland ?

A few years ago there was an incident where a US ship was firing live ammunition into the water near the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Some hikers were startled and frightened by the impacts of these rounds in their vicinity.  It was very much in the local news at the time. Were these round depleted uranium ?

A few years ago, a big shell from a Canadian ship was accidentally shot into someone's shed in a community on Vancouver Island.  Was the shell containing depleted uranium ?

I would appreciate your looking into these matters and responding as soon as possible.  Thank you.
