LEUKAEMIA DEATH PROMPTS SOLDIERS' HEALTH FEARS
(B92, 30. 12. 2000.)

Rome, Saturday - A carabiniere who died in September is believed to be the fifth Italian to be killed by cancer since returning from service in the former Yugoslavia. Rome confirmed that the 31-year-old, who served in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995, had died of leukaemia. It is widely feared that such malign diseases are caused by the depleted uranium in weapons. The deaths, and the cases of 12 other Italian soldiers suffering from various kinds of tumours, have prompted calls for a revision of the length of time Italian soldiers can serve in Kosovo. The matter has also been raised by the Belgian defence minister, who has called on his NATO colleagues to discuss the issue. Similar diseases have been reported among Belgian, Portuguese, Dutch and British soldiers who served in the former Yugoslavia. (Srna)
