ITALIAN PEACEKEEPERS DYING OF LEUKEMIA: TIMES (22 dicembre)

(B92, 20. 12. 2000.)

London, Wednesday - The Italian Parliament could soon open a discussion on shortening Italian army members' terms in the Balkan missions, or even their full withdrawal, since it was made public that a third Italian soldier has died of leukemia, the London Times reported today. According to Italian MPs, these soldiers' cancer was directly caused by exposure to the depleted uranium radiation from the NATO bombs parts in Kosovo. (Radio BBC) The Italian Defense Minister Sergio Mattarella said there was no proof for these claims, but members of the Parliamentary defence committee argued that the deceaseds' families deserve answers.
