(AGI) - Roma, 29 lug. - Dieci persone sono state arrestate tra Roma e Palermo
a seguito di una operazione condotta dal Nucleo Operativo dei Carabinieri di
Roma perche' componenti di una organizzazione a livello internazionale dedita
alle truffe con introiti per oltre 100 miliardi di lire.
L'inchiesta e' partita un anno fa quando i Carabinieri trovarono in un deposito
romano una barra di uranio che faceva parte di una grossa partita di cui si erano
perse le tracce dal 1988; da allora la sostanza radioattiva era stata sottratta da
un cargo che dagli Stati Uniti doveva arrivare nello Zaire per usi di tipo civile.
L'organizzazione sgominata cercava di vendere l'uranio a Paesi interessati
all'acquisto, raggirandoli sul possibile impiego, visto che la partita della
sostanza e' utilizzabile solo come combustibile civile e non potrebbe essere
utilizzata per fini "bellici" (NDR: Balle! Non sanno come si fanno le bombe).

ROME, July 29 (Reuters) - Italian police said on
Thursday they had smashed a uranium trafficking and
fraud ring concealed behind a Sicily-based front
called the ``World Parliament for Security and Peace.''

Ten people were arrested after an investigation
launched a year ago when police found a uranium bar
in a Rome warehouse, part of a cargo that vanished
in 1988 en route from the United States to Zaire,
now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it
was intended for non-military use.

``We are sure those arrested were or are still in
possession of 10 bars of uranium stolen 11 years ago
from a consignment from the United States destined
for Zaire and not seen since,'' Colonel Vittorio
Tomasone of Rome's Carabinieri paramilitary police,
told reporters.

Police said the group had tried to sell on the
radioactive material by cheating would-be buyers into
thinking it could be used for military ends.

The organisation used the Palermo-based
``Parliament for Security and Peace'' -- which police
said awarded a prize to former South African
President Nelson Mandela in 1995 -- as a front to
traffic in the uranium, police said.

Police raids also uncovered Argentine pesos worth
around half a million dollars and false diplomatic
passports.

Police said the gang was a kind of ``criminal holding
company,'' divided into various units. One dealt with
the uranium, as well as loan sharking and extortion,
while another was involved in bank frauds.

Most of the frauds involved counterfeiting money,
international securities and bank drafts which were
cashed in on European and U.S. markets, the police said.

di ripartizione dei profitti 50/50 e avra' una struttura di management unica e
comune sia per la joint venture passeggeri che per quella cargo .
Previste anche decisioni congiunte su flotta e su investimenti in nuovi aerei.
Secondo Klm, tra le ulteriori ipotesi allo studio c'e anche quella di una fusione.
